Follow guidelines

This refers to the Madras High Court’s suggestion to the government that social workers or mediators with experience be nominated and housed in the premises of All Women Police Stations along with Dowry Prohibition Officers. Mr. Justice Regupathi’s suggestions to curb the alleged violation of law by the police officers in AWPS in the State were brilliant and hit the nail on the head.

Misbehaviour of policewomen has been going on for far too long and unchecked. I know of many instances where respectable professionals and others have been badly treated and their reputation permanently damaged. This is unacceptable in a civilised society. I plead with the Director-General of Police to take the suggestions seriously and implement them meticulously.

Strict controls on the discretion enjoyed by women police in handling domestic disputes need to be installed and reviewed at the highest level. I would go even to the extent of suggesting to the honourable judge to appoint a monitoring committee to review the implementation of the guidelines and submit a report to him annually. Otherwise, their impact can be diluted by vested interests.

R.K. Raghavan,

Former CBI Director, Chennai
