Farmer’s funeral held peacefully

NELOGAL (Haveri district): The funeral of the farmer Puttappa Honnatti, who died on Tuesday morning after battling for life for almost a month, was held here peacefully in the evening. He was critically injured when police fired on protesting farmers in Haveri on June 10.

While the whole village turned out for the funeral, the Government was represented by the Ministers C.M. Udasi and Basavaraj Bommai. Members of various organisations, including the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha were present.

The whole village was waiting for the arrival of the body of the deceased farmer after it became known that Puttappa had died.

The mortal remains arrived around 5.30 p.m. The funeral rituals began only after 7 p.m. The body was taken in a procession around the village before the final rites were performed.

Compensation

After the funeral, Mr. Udasi and Mr. Bommai handed over a compensation cheque for Rs. 2 lakh to the family members of Puttappa.

They also announced that a group D job at the local school would be given to Karabasavva, wife of Puttappa. Mr. Bommai said that on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party, a sum of Rs. 1 lakh in the names of each of the three children of Puttappa would be deposited in a bank.
