Union leader attacked

KOCHI: The Eloor police have registered a case in connection with the attack on George Thomas, general secretary of Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) PD Workers’ Organisation on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, Mr. Thomas was attacked by two motorcycle-borne persons near FACT headquaters.

Trade union rivalry is reported to be the reason behind the attack. Meanwhile, Hind Mazdoor Sabha president Thampan Thomas has condemned the attack on Mr. Thomas. The HMS leader said the attack was carried out in the wake of the election of office-bearers of FACT Employees’ Cooperative Credit Society. At a press conference here on Tuesday, he alleged that a section of the CPI(M) leadership was unhappy with the election results which precipitated an altercation.
