Bangalore: Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda has said that there is a need to protect and encourage native cultural forms such as native medicine in the light of increasing influence of modern medicinal methods.

He was speaking after releasing the book “Budakattu Vaidya Samskriti” (Tribal Medicinal Culture) authored by Mangala Sridhar, former Leader of Opposition (BJP) in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, here on Tuesday.

Mr. Ramachandra Gowda said that majority of professionals had become money-making tools instead of rendering services to society in their respective areas.

Speaking on the book, CEO of the Karnataka Bio Diversity Board P. Satyanarayana Bhat said that Dr. Managala Sridhar had taken pains to discern 14 forms of tribal medicinal methods and interact with over 150 persons practising such methods. Her abilities to name 169 plants in six languages and their medicinal qualities spoke of her conviction and hard work Dr. Bhat added.

Dr. Mangala, literary critic Ki. Ram. Nagaraj and MLA B.N. Vijayakumar spoke. Chairman of the Kannada Book Authority Siddalingaiah presided over the event.

Of the several persons present, who are practising the native medicinal forms in the rural areas across the State, Karithimmaiah of Ramanagar and Madeshwara Gowda of Sirsi were facilitated on the occasion.
