Court orders police protection to TNEB staff for fixing connection at a house

K.T.Sangameswaran

Mother-son feud leads to the High Court directive

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the police to give protection to the employees of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for fixing the board and the consumption meter for providing electricity connection to a premises. following differences of opinion between a person and his mother.

It was a most unfortunate case where the mother, aged 85 was interfering with her son, aged 63 years, from getting electricity connection. “Instead of settling their dispute over the property in question, the doors of police authorities have been knocked to get electricity service connection,” Justice K.Venkataraman observed in his order. S.Arulanandham of Anna Salai, Sastrinagar in Vyasarpadi, submitted that his father died intestate in 1995. He continued to live on the first floor of the property with his family. His mother was residing on the ground floor of the property with his brother. The entire property was provided with a single phase electricity service connection in the name of his father. In view of differences of opinion between him and his mother, she disconnected the electricity supply to his premises last year. When he approached the Electricity Board for a separate connection to his portion, the Board refused. Following a writ petition by him, the court directed the board to provide service connection.

His mother was preventing the provision of a separate connection. He filed a police complaint against his mother and to provide security for fixing the electricity board and the consumption meter. But police protection had not been given to him, following which he filed the present writ petition to direct the Inspector, M.K.B.Nagar police station here to give protection for the purpose of giving the electricity connection by the Board employees.

In his order, Mr.Justice Venkataraman said when the petitioner was legally entitled to electricity connection to his portion, it was needless to say that his mother could not prevent him from getting it. She could not prevent the Board from giving supply connection to the petitioner. The Judge directed the police Inspector to give protection to the petitioner and the Board employees for fixing the board and the meter for giving the electricity connection. The court directed Mr.Arulanandham to approach the police seeking protection.
