AFFECTED LOT: Residents of Ward 21 in Tirupur staging a demonstration over a faulty storm water drainage on Tuesday. TIRUPUR: Over 100 residents of Ward 21 of the Tirupur Corporation staged a demonstration to demand that wastewater from a storm water drainage in the neighbouring 15 Velampalayam Municipality should be stopped from entering their ward. The residents complained that wastewater was entering their layouts because of blocks in the drainage. Disposal pointAssistant Executive Engineer of the Corporation M.V.D. Tamilselvan said the drainage that originated from Ward 13 of the municipality did not have a disposal point. This led to wastewater overflowing from the drainage canal and entering the residential colonies. The Corporation officials said the issue was discussed with the municipality. “The municipality has agreed to pump out water till it finds a disposal point,” he said. No proper mechanismCorporation Ward 21 councillor S. Ravichandran said the municipality had been told a number of time about the problems caused by the lack of a proper disposal mechanism. “Wastewater from 150 houses on two streets gets into our ward,” he said. “We have agreed to the municipality’s request for 10 days to find a solution.” The councillor of Ward 13 in the municipality, Devi Murugesan, blamed the problem on the Corporation. A main road separates the municipality’s ward from that of the Corporation. “We got the storm water canal built after a long struggle. It passes below the road through a culvert and enters the Corporation area,” she explained. “But, how can we find a disposal point on the Corporation’s territory? The Corporation itself can do it,” she said. The councillor said it would not be possible to have a disposal facility at a point suggested by the Corporation. There was no gradient to that point and it would be unwise to create one by digging 12 ft to 15 ft, she said. But, to find a solution for the present problem and avoid protests, the municipality had decided to pump water out.
