Stayed
J. Venkatesan
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed all further proceedings pending before a trial court in Chengalpattu in a defamation complaint against Tamil actor Kushboo for her alleged remarks on pre-marital sex.
While refusing to quash the proceedings, the Madras High Court, by a judgment dated April 30, directed the Chief Metropolitan magistrate, Egmore, to conduct a joint trial of the 23 complaints and to dispose of the matter in six months. The present appeal by Ms. Kushboo is directed against this judgment. A Bench, comprising Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices P. Sathasivam and J.M. Panchal, stayed the impugned judgment insofar as the complaint pending in Chengalpattu court was concerned. The Bench granted the stay and issued notice to the respondent Kanniammal.
