Bopanna gets past Kim

NEWPORT: Indian Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna set up a second round clash with top seed Mardy Fish after defeating Kevin Kim 6-3, 6-4 in the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships here on Monday.

Both the players struggled in converting the breakpoints and squandered numerous chances. Bopanna could convert just three of 10 while Kim could convert just one of the nine break points that came his way.

But Bopanna lived upto his reputation of being a booming server firing 15 aces as against one of Kim.

Bopanna, who is ranked 374, has a tough test in the second round as he is up against a player, who is ranked as high as 41 in the ATP ranking charts.

Though Fish got a bye in the first round, no top seed has won the tournament in its 31 years.

In Stuttgart, shortly after Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Mercedes Cup, Albert Montanes of Spain upset seventh-seeded Jose Acasuso 6-3, 7-6(5) in the first round on Monday.
