Daylight robbery in Delhi: Cashier shot

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old cashier of a mobile phones showroom was shot dead and robbed of Rs.1.35 lakh in cash by two men in broad daylight in the bustling Shakarpur area of the Capital on Tuesday.

It all happened around 11-45 a.m. when Mahesh Kapoor was returning to the showroom on Vikas Marg in East Delhi after withdrawing money from the Preet Vihar branches of two banks. He had parked his scooter near the showroom and was heading for the office when two men with crash helmets accosted him and tried to snatch the bag containing cash.Mahesh resisted their attempt, at which the robbers opened fire, pumping nine bullets into his body. In all, they fired over a dozen shots.

As the profusely bleeding cashier collapsed on the road, the robbers yanked the money bag from him and fled on foot.On the way, they grappled with a motorcyclist in an attempt to snatch his vehicle. However, the duo beat a hasty retreat when the motorcyclist raised an alarm.

Mahesh Kapoor was rushed by passers-by to a nearby nursing home where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Shakarpur police have registered a case of robbery and murder and launched a hunt for the culprits.

They are trying to find out if the robbers had parked their two-wheeler somewhere close to the scene of crime as they were both wearing helmets.Described by his colleagues as an honest man, Mahesh Kapoor had been working at the showroom for several years. He lived in a rented accommodation in Geeta Colony with his wife Yashika and son Rohit, who works with a mobile phone service provider company and was to get engaged in a week’s time.
