Impostors dupe power consumers
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Power distribution company BSES has claimed that impostors masquerading as discom officials duped three Kotla Mubarakpur consumers of Rs.78,000 recently.
The impostors used fake BSES identity cards and forged stationery to extort money on the pretext that the residents’ meters were tampered and they would have the penalty bill settled for a fraction of the original amount.
According to the officials, three consumers were duped into parting with Rs.78,000.
“Posing as BSES officials, they told one consumer that his meter was tampered and he would have to pay a heavy penalty to BSES. Thereafter, they offered to have the case ‘settled’ for a lesser amount. He paid them Rs.15,000 as part of the payment,” said a BSES official.
“In another case, a consumer was duped of Rs.18,000. In this case, too, the consumer was conned by the impostors posing as BSES officials into believing that his meter was tampered but they could have his case ‘settled’ for a lesser amount,” the official said.
In the third case, another resident of the same area was duped of Rs.45,000 while trying to clear his outstanding dues.
