CHENNAI: Secretary to the State Tourism and Culture Department V.Irai Anbu underscored the importance of newspapers’ role in shaping up a person’s life. Launching The Hindu Newspaper In Education (NIE) Programme for the 2008-09 academic year at the St.John’s International Residential School (SJIRS), Palanjur, near Chennai, Mr.Irai Anbu commended the daily for the initiative. He said it not only covered various facets of life but also provided a wholesome learning experience. “The success of an educational programme through newspapers is in how best it could relate to one’s life. And The Hindu strives hard to open up new vistas in widening the knowledge base in a very meaningful way,” he said. Serving societyS. Thyagarajan, Associate Editor-Sports, The Hindu, said that the daily’s endeavour was to serve all segments of society. Describing The Hindu-NIE initiative as a “scholastic charity keeping in mind national concern,” Senior Principal of SJIRS R.Kishore Kumar, spoke on the role of education through newspapers. He commended the initiative being launched in 41 cities covering over 6 lakh students and said it was a valuable teaching aid. SJIRS Principal Ajitha Mathews said news presentation of The Hindu was not only distinctive but played a responsible role in moulding the younger generation. SJIRS Head Boy Preetam Banik, a Class IX student Li-Ai Ling Patricia, and the Head Girl of SJIRS Shovana Ghosh said The Hindu helped them keep abreast of the latest developments in the country.
