NREGP tardy in Kasaragod

Staff Reporter

Collector warns officials

District Collector holds review meeting

Worst performance by Pallikkara panchayat

KASARAGOD: A review of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in the district has found the progress of the programme unsatisfactory in several panchayats.

District Collector A.T. James, who spoke at the meeting held at the collectorate on Tuesday, said strong action would be taken against secretaries of those panchayats which failed to implement the programme earnestly.

A sum of Rs.2 crore was spent in the district in the last three months.

The performance of Pallikkara panchayat in the district was the worst.

Rules flouted

It was found to have violated the stipulation that administrative expenses should not exceed four per cent of the estimated cost of the project.

The panchayat spent the entire amount for administrative purposes, including salary of the staff.

The performance of Meenja, Cheruvathoor, and Uduma panchayats was also found far from satisfactory.

All the panchayats spent only less than Rs.1 lakh for projects under the NREGP. Karadukka, Bellur and Paivalige panchayats were also slow in implementing the programme.

It was found that Badiadka panchayat had made considerable progress in the implementation of the programme. The panchayat spent around Rs.17 lakh in three months for various projects.

Epidemic fever

The presidents of various local bodies who participated in the meeting also said the epidemic fever that hit the district had affected the NREGP.

According to them, a large number of workers in rural areas were affected by fever and they were unable to turn up for work.

But there were criticisms that the panchayats had not taken up sanitation projects to check the outbreak of epidemic fever.
