Nazirudeen goes back on his allegation Crime Branch has ruled out possibility of sabotage Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) Special Investigation Group – III on Wednesday interrogated the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES) State president T. Nazirudeen in connection with the fire that broke out at the Moideen Palli Road, adjacent to the Sweet Meat Street (SMS), on April 5, 2007. Crime Branch Superintendent of Police T.K. Rajmohan and other officials quizzed him for two hours in the afternoon. This was following an order by the Inspector General of Police (Crimes) K. Padmakumar after the City Corporation Council and Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran urged Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan to probe into the allegation made by Mr. Nazirudeen that the fire had been planned. Nine persons were killed, 50 injured and property estimated at Rs.15 crore were destroyed in the fire. Mr. Nazirudeen told the interrogators that he had bluffed about the evidence, which he apparently had, to show that the incident was a sabotage. He said he had echoed the statements he overheard from A. Jagadeesh, owner of the wholesale firecracker shop from where the blaze originated, that the area was deliberately set afire. He had also alleged that the Chief Town Planner, soon after the incident, proposed a sketch to build a shopping mall on the site. The statements of Mr. Nazirudeen had been recorded for official purpose, Mr. Rajmohan said. The Crime Branch had ruled out the possibility of sabotage.
