Unique robotic surgery at AIIMS
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Department of Urology at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here claims to have successfully conducted a unique robotic surgery for bladder pheochromocytoma.
“Pheochromocytoma is a rare neuro-endocrine tumour that gives rise to hypertension (high blood pressure). Hypertension is a common problem and pheochromocytoma can be a cause of hypertension in less than 1 per cent of cases. Hypertension can be cured by removal of the pheochromocytoma,” said Prof. Narmada P. Gupta, head of the Urology Department.
The 53-year-old patient who was operated upon is doing well, said Dr. Gupta, adding, “While an open surgery is what has been traditionally practised , we have used robotic surgery, and instead of a large incision managed to work with five smaller entry points into the body.”
