Tamil Nadu’s plea to upstream States

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu on Wednesday appealed to the upstream States not to oppose projects of intra-linking of rivers.

Addressing the National Water Resources Council in New Delhi, Durai Murugan, Public Works and Law Minister, referring to the State’s schemes of intra-linking of rivers, said such projects conceived of using only water that had reached downstream States.

Under the projects, floodwater was sought to be diverted to the needy areas.

Noting that the State government sought 90 per cent grant from the Centre under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) for two projects of intra-linking of rivers, he hoped that the Union government would accord sanction for the projects.

Mr. Durai Murugan, reiterating the State’s position on inter-linking of peninsular rivers, argued that there would be no harm in diverting floodwater to those areas where water was needed for irrigation and drinking and ensuring optimal utilisation.

He wanted the Union government and the National Water Development Agency to convene a meeting of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to find an amicable solution to the implementation of the Pamba-Achankovil-Vaippar link project.
