Preventive measure: Policemen deployed at the Krishnagiri Collectorate following tension during the tender process on Wednesday. —

Krishnagiri: The police on Wednesday resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse an unruly mob of contractors and their supporters reportedly belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Communist Party of India (CPI) when they exchanged blows and damaged vehicles at the Collectorate.

Trouble began when the officials of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) started the finalising process of the tenders consisting of packages worth Rs.10 crores to lay roads in the blocks of Krishnagiri, Veppanapalli, Kelamangalam, Thally and Shoolagiri under the NABARD rural roads scheme.

Contractors rbelonging to the CPI protested against the opening of bids and said that the process should not be completed. Contractors of the DMK prevented them. The situtation took a serious turn when more than 100 supporters of D. Ramachandiran, MLA, clashed with DMK cadres. Police resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.
