“Don’t demolish Salem Collectorate building”
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has said that the 184-year-old Salem Collectorate building should not be demolished until the authorities concerned pass a reasoned order on a representation, if any, from a civil rights organisation, to declare it a heritage building.
In a writ petition P. Dhamayanthi, joint general secretary of the Centre for Protection of Civil Liberties, Salem, said the building was constructed in 1824. It was a structure constructed using Burma Teak, bricks and stones of high quality, which were stable till date. It housed valuable antiques, plaques and inscriptions.
The building was an important reminder of the colonial past. The authorities decided to demolish it, ignoring objections from the people of Salem and heritage lovers. The petitioner said she had represented before the authorities, but in vain.
In the order disposing of the petition, the First Bench of Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla directed the petitioner to make a fresh representation along with a copy of the court order to the respondents — Secretaries of Home and PWD departments and the Superintending Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India, Chennai.
