dated July 10, 1958: Mass protests in S. Africa

“The group-areas banishment of Indians from Pretoria and Durban violates every principle devised by the wit of humanity for the good government of men,” declares the Cape Times, commenting on the recent Nationalist government proclamations under the Group Areas Act. The effect of the proclamations is to expel Indians in Durban and in Pretoria from their present residential and trading areas. They will no longer be permitted to trade in the “white areas”. Mass demonstrations of protest were held in the two cities on June 26.
