DUBAI: The release of the 3,147 workers, who were detained by authorities in the UAE, following violent incidents on Friday is likely to be delayed. Diplomatic sources told The Hindu that the number of Indians among those who had been picked up by the Interior Ministry’s riot police is 2900. The Interior Ministry is handling the incident and it is being viewed in a “law and order” framework. The investigations are turning out to be time consuming. The sources said it was likely that the investigators were looking at any possible links that the workers might have with “extremist organisations” in India. The workers were sent to five different detention centres. Two of these centres are in Abu Dhabi and one each is located in the emirates of Dubai, Fujeirah and Ras Al Khaimah. While the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate here are in contact with the authorities, the Ministry has so far not sought their active assistance.
