Matching steps: CRPF personnel at a passing-out and attestation parade at Avadi on Wednesday. CHENNAI: After an intensive 44-week training, 555 recruits on Wednesday joined the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The passing-out and attestation parade was held at Recruits Training Centre-2 at Avadi. Inspector General (Training) at the Directorate General of CRPF, S.S. Rawat, reviewed the parade and honoured the best trainees. Kailash Chandra was adjudged the best all round trainee. Chandraveer Singh was presented with a trophy for outstanding performance in firing. Ashok Kumar Sharma was adjudged the best in indoor subjects and Vinod Kumar bagged the award for being the best in outdoor activities. Addressing the function, Mr. Rawat said the CRPF, set up in 1939, had more than 200 battalions across the country. Several youngsters were showing keen interest in joining the force. Besides activities to ensure national security, CRPF personnel were deployed in relief and rescue operations during natural calamity and to control riots. The CRPF was playing an active role in combating naxalite activities in various States, including Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chhattisgarh. Deputy Inspector General of Police and Recruits Training Centre-2’s principal A. Ponnuswamy said the Centre had imparted basic training to about 47,600 recruits since its inception in 1969. The passing-out parade turned out to be a colourful event with the recruits performing traditional dances of various States, including Kavadi Attam of Tamil Nadu and Dandiya of Gujarat. A demonstration of unarmed combat by the recruits won resounding applause from the audience. Other events, including drill and aerobics, proved to be a feast for the eyes.
