Youth Congress leader goes on fast

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K. Karunakaran, veteran Congress leader, on Wednesday told the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government that it will have to pay a heavy price if it does not withdraw the Class VII social science textbook that has been rejected by the people of the State.

Inaugurating an indefinite hunger stir launched by Youth Congress State president T. Siddique in protest against the education policy of the LDF government and its refusal to withdraw the controversial textbook, Mr. Karunakaran predicted that it would be difficult for the Chief Minister and his colleagues to continue in office if they failed to hear the voices of dissent.

No one had any idea what was happening in the Secretariat, with the Chief Minister at odds with the situation.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, addressing the gathering, said the University of Kerala was not the property of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) to appoint friends and relatives of party workers.

The CPI(M) would have to answer the people of the State for its actions related to the university’s assistant grade recruitment that had dashed the hopes of thousands of job-seekers.

The government would have to face strong popular agitations if it continued its arrogant postures, Mr. Chandy said.

The Vice-Chancellor’s stand that the Lok Ayukta did not have the powers to intervene in the appointment was a clear indication that corruption had taken place.

The Youth Congress ended a relay hunger strike it had launched earlier, with Mr. Siddique taking over the baton.

The Youth Congress also announced that it would start torch light processions at the Assembly constituency-level proclaiming support to their fasting leader, a statement of the organisation said.
