FRESH IDEAS: Exhibition of works by members of Sculptors Forum of Karnataka at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Bangalore: An exhibition of contemporary sculptures in steel, wood, ceramic and fibreglass by members of the Contemporary Sculpture Forum was inaugurated by Transport Minister R. Ashok at the Chitrakala Parishat on Wednesday.

S. Settar, Director (Hon), Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, spoke about some key issues faced by sculptors today.

From the procurement of stones for sculpture to the role of artists and the Government in encouraging and preserving art, he spoke on difficulties faced by artists.

It was important that people visit museums regularly just as they do in other cities abroad. Museums should be better maintained.

Sculptures like “Mother and Child” by Jagannath Jakkepalli were a blend of black and gold, but made completely from fibreglass lending the illusion of stone. The sculpture depicts the bond between mother and child, represented through the umbilical cord.

Combining the shape of a woman and plants among various other things, he speaks of the link between various forms of nature and his freedom of thought lends the same freedom to the viewer.

Rajesh D. Devangaon, who had been working with mixed media, presented an interesting sculpture called “Hot Gold” – with a grinder – showing the process of making gold.

The exhibition is on till July 15.
