CHENNAI: A touch screen kiosk, an information portal of Indian Bank, was inaugurated by Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Usha Thorat at the bank’s T. Nagar branch on Wednesday.

Taking a cue from RBI Governor Y.V. Reddy, Indian Bank officials developed the information portal within four months with the help of a Bangalore-based software firm. The portal will provide information about the bank, its products and services. Complaints and suggestions can be made through the kiosk, and the head office will respond within 48 hours.

Talking to journalists, Ms. Thorat said the central bank wanted to take the banking services to as many people as possible using information technology, and the introduction of touch screen kiosks was one such initiative. However, it was not mandatory for all the banks to go in for an information portal.

“We are the first public sector bank to roll out the touch screen kiosk on a trail basis. Assessing the results, we may roll it out in other centres, including Anna Nagar, Adyar and Mylapore.

Plans are on to install the kiosks at airports and railway stations,” said M.S. Sundara Rajan, Indian Bank chairman and managing director.

The machine costs Rs. 80,000. The information about the bank products can be viewed in English and Tamil. There is a provision for making use of Hindi too. Customers can download application forms through the kiosk.
