U.P. Chief Information Commissioner suspended
Special Correspondent
LUCKNOW: Governor T.V. Rajeswar on Wednesday suspended Chief Information Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh M.A. Khan. The order will come into force with immediate effect.
A former Judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Khan has been charged with serious misconduct and grave irregularities in appointments made by him in the Commission.
A release by the Chief Secretary’s office said complaints had been received on Justice Khan’s style of functioning, which was allegedly in violation of the Right to Information Act, 2005. The matter was referred to the Governor, who used his authority under Section 17(2 ) of the RTI Act, 2005 to suspend Justice Khan. The Governor referred the matter to the Supreme Court. An inquiry had been instituted and Justice Khan had been barred from attending the office until the completion of the probe.
Justice Khan was appointed the CIC by the former Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh, after the RTI Act became applicable in 2005. Justice Khan recently incurred the wrath of the Mayawati government for allegedly making some observations on the Ambedkar Memorial being constructed in Gomtinagar here.
