Karthik in smashing form

Chennai: Opener K.B. Arun Karthik’s unbeaten 218 (234b, 26x4) was the highlight of Grand Slam’s 397 for three against the promoted Southern Railway Institute side on the opening day of the first round in the TNCA first division league here on Wednesday.

Karthik, among the heroes of a triumphant Grand Slam campaign last season, was involved in two valuable partnerships: 146 for the first wicket with J. Prashanth (39) and 172 for the third with K. Sriram (81, 129b, 9x4, 1x6).

There were also centuries on day one from Indian Bank’s E. Suresh (121 batting, 255b, 14x4, 1x6) and Aruna’s Noorul Riaz (129 batting, 266b, 19x4), and a five-wicket haul by Parry’s left-arm spinner Rahil Shah.

Suresh’s effort and S. Karthik’s 84 (171b, 10x4) took Indian Bank to a creditable 255 for four against last season’s runner-up Jolly Rovers at the IIT-Chemplast ground. Karthik and Suresh added 193 for the third wicket.

At the ICL-Guru Nanak ground, Aruna CC, riding on Riaz’s undefeated century, made 262 for three against Vijay CC at stumps. Riaz put on 91 for the third wicket with Shijit Chandran (45) and an unbeaten 118 for the fourth with Kishore V. Nath (49 batting).

Vijay, led by a new skipper in R. Prasanna, struck early through paceman Vivek Raj before running into a road block in the form of Riaz.

UFCC bundled out

Rahil (five for 49) and off-spinner N. Raghavendran (four for 47) combined to bundle out UFCC (T. Nagar) for 128 at the Murugappa ground. Parry’s was 99 for four at stumps.

India Pistons rallied from early setbacks to finish the day at 210 for seven against Young Stars at the CPT-IPL ground. S. Satish claimed three for 45 with his medium pace.

At the MRF-Pachaiyappa’s ground, Alwarpet was 235 for six at close against Globe Trotters. Huzefa Patel made 54 while skipper D. Vasu remained unbeaten on 69 (93b, 9x4, 2x6).

Alwarpet was in trouble at 130 for six before rearguard action by Vasu, who raised 105 for the seventh wicket with Maruthi Raghav (37 batting). For Trotters, Gnaneswara Rao scalped three.
