Helping them build positive relationships

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: A five-day national coaching camp for mentally challenged athletes from various parts of the country got off to a colourful start at the University Oval Grounds here on Thursday. More than 300 athletes are participating in the camp.

The athletes will get intensive training in various athletic events. The main focus of the camp would be to provide the mentally challenged athletes an opportunity to enjoy the experiences of a “full sports” camp, the organisers said.

Rotary Mysore Midtown, in collaboration with Special Olympics Bharath, Karnataka, has organised the camp. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has sponsored the event. Before the start, the participants took out an impressive public awareness rally from the Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry to the Oval Grounds. Athletes carried placards with message, “We need your support, not courtesy”. Actor and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president Jayamala inaugurated the camp.

A press release here said the athletes will be given more than 25 hours of sports instruction and enrichment activities during the coaching camp. The camp is expected to build positive relationship and friendship between athletes and volunteers that will continue beyond the camp, the organisers said.

The coaches and trainers will be trained through special theory and demonstration classes on track and field events involving special children. Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister and BJP MLA S.A. Ramdas will be addressing the athletes during the camp’s valedictory event on July 13.

Vice-Chairman of Special Olympics Bharath, New Delhi, C. Vishwanath Iyer and advocate of Karnataka High Court H.S. Chandramouli will be guests of honour. President and Secretary of Rotary Mysore Sanjay Shyamanur and D.S.D. Solanki will be present.
