Students win cash awards

PUDUCHERRY: The Fisheries department on Thursday gave away cash prizes and certificates to winners of essay and elocution competitions held as part of Fish Farmers Day celebrations.

Fisheries Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan handed over the prizes to six students of Chevalier Selane Government Higher Secondary School, Kalapet. The first prize comprised Rs.500, the second Rs.300 and the third Rs.200.

The essay competition was held on the topic “Inducing breeding in fish culture”, and the elocution contest on “Importance of inland fish culture”. Students from Class XII participated.

Director of Fisheries G. Ramalakshmi said the day was celebrated to create awareness of fish culture practice.

Fish Farmers Day is celebrated to mark the work of Indian scientist Hiralal Choudhary who succeeded in induced breeding of Indian major carps in 1957.
