Families flee from Nathpa

Recong Peo (H.P.): Frequent landslides due to construction of 1500 Nathpa-Jhakri Hydro Electric project have forced 82 families of Nathpa village, 65 km from here, to take shelter in a nearby forest.

The villagers left their houses around 10 days back due to regular felling of stones, village sarpanch Jay Ram said.

“The hill tops have developed cracks due to blasts conducted to construct the dam. Earlier, the landslides used be occasional, but now it has been taking place quite frequently particularly during nights,” he said. The villagers, scared to return to their houses, are demanding permanent rehabilitation at a safe place.

Deputy Commissioner of Kinnaur P.S. Draike said he is in talks with the government on the issue. “Till then tents have been provided to them as a temporary arrangement,” he added. — PTI
