Madurai Aavin plans to install 23 bulk milk coolers

Staff Reporter

They will be set up in Madurai and Theni districts

MADURAI: To ensure that the quality of milk is maintained while being transported from dairy farms to the Aavin unit, 23 bulk milk coolers are going to be installed in Madurai and Theni districts. The equipment will cool the milk to 4 degrees Celsius, considered a safe level for handling.

“The machine will be located within a 10 km radius of production area. It is being set up as part of the clean milk production (CMP) practices to ensure quality of milk, ” K. Thangarajan, General Manager (in-charge) of Madurai Aavin, told The Hindu here on Thursday.

More than 3,000 society members had been given training in CMP practices, he added.

The Madurai District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Madurai Aavin), which covers Madurai and Theni districts, is among the 17 unions in the State under Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation.

Rs.3-crore project

S. Karthikeyan, Marketing Manager, said that while the cost of a single cooler unit was Rs. 25 lakh, the total project would cost around Rs. 3 crore. While the Central Government would bear 75 per cent of the project cost, the district Aavin unions would contribute the rest.

Mr. Thangarajan said that the project was being executed in three batches. For the first batch of eight, construction of sheds that would house the milk coolers was under way.

Land had been identified for the next eight and tenders were to be floated in a week’s time, he said.

As for the final seven, land had been identified and proposals sent to the Dairy Commissioner for approval. Collector S.S. Jawahar, who is also the Special Officer of Madurai Aavin, was reviewing the progress of this project every week, he said.
