Athletic meet begins today

More than 2,500 athletes from various parts of the State to attend

HUB OF ACTIVITY: Tiruvarur Stadium getting ready for the three-day State Level Junior Athletic meet beginning on Friday. —

TIRUVARUR: The members of the Tiruvarur District Athletic Association have put in a lot of effort to make the 23rd Tamil Nadu inter-district junior athletic championship a memorable one.

The three-day meet, which begins at the District Stadium, Tiruvarur, on Friday, will see participation of more than 2,500 athletes from various parts of the State.

Arrangements

According to Collector M. Chandrasekaran, all facilities like lodging, transport, drinking water, medical have been made for the event.

Special pandals and shamianas have been put up at the stadium. An extra athletic track and long jump pit have been put up for the meet.

Improvements worth Rs. 10 lakh have been done at the stadium in view of the meet.

A new road is laid from Thanjavur-Tiruvarur road to reach the stadium at a cost of Rs. 4.5 lakh. The events will end in the evening and if they prolong, arrangements have been made for holding them in flood lights.

Medical, ambulance facilities have been made. Additional toilets have been constructed for the benefit of athletes. Five buses will reach the people to the stadium.

Inaugural function

The meet will be officially inaugurated at 2.30 p.m. on Friday by Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan in the presence of president of Tamil Nadu Athletics Association W.I. Dawaram. Vice-president of the Association C. Sylendra Babu will hoist the athletic flag. Olympic torch will be taken from railway station and handed over to the District Collector.

Forty athletes are participating in the event from Tiruvarur district.
