BHUBANESWAR: The Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday demanded immediate arrest of those who attacked Brahmachari Madhab Chaitanya for his opposition to cow slaughter in Kandhamal district. If the culprits were not taken to task within seven days, the VHP would step up its agitation for which administration would be responsible, VHP general secretary Pramod Kumar Acharya told at a press conference here. Alleged attack on the VHP activists almost pushed the district to the brink of yet another communal violence. Two communities -- dalits (who mostly embraced Christianity) and tribals -- had come in confrontation a few months ago which resulted in loss of life as well as property. The VHP also demanded a judicial probe into illegal cattle trading in the district while seeking dismissal of Nikhil Kanodia, superintendent of police. “Mr. Kanodia should be sacked from service. Even two days after the incident, the police are yet to arrest the key accused,” Mr. Acharya said. Madhab Chaitanya said despite his timely information to the police about mass slaughtering of cows, the administration did not react and he was targeted by “Christian militants.” They reiterated that Churches that had encroached upon the government land should be demolished. Patrolling intensifiedMeanwhile, the administration intensified its patrolling.
