Institutional deliveries go up

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: State Health and Family Welfare Minister Sanatan Bisi on Thursday said the State has achieved a landmark in the field of institutional deliveries.

As per the findings of the DFID, the number of institutional deliveries jumped from a meagre 35 per cent to more than 61 per cent over a period of one year only, according to the Health Department.

“This has been possible because of the involvement of ASHA workers, ANM and paramedical staff, ” Mr. Bisi said.

Between 2001 and 2006, infant mortality rate in State declined by 19 per cent, which was three times higher than the rate of decline (6 per cent) during the preceding five years (1996-2001).

Stating that decline was one of the highest recorded rates in the country, Mr. Bisi said the ratio of malnutrition also decreased to a great extent in the State during the last seven year.

“The number of infant mortality rate has also been decreased to a larger extent,” he said, adding that the immunisation programme found a good response in the State.

“Similar to IMR, between 1998 and 2006, the State has recorded an impressive improvement in child nutrition, child immunisation and infant and child feeding practices,” the Health Minister said

In vigilance trap

Vigilance department has registered a case against N. Madhab Reddy, Assistant Secretary to Service Co-operative Society, Karapalli in Ganjam district for allegedly demanding a gratification of Rs.3000 from a farmer.

The accused had promised the villager, Narasingh Behera of village Karapalli, to forward the loan documents to Berhampur Central Co-operative Bank for exemption of loan under waiver scheme.
