PUDUKOTTAI: Students from backward classes would get pre-matric scholarship under the Centrally-sponsored scheme from this academic year, Chairman of Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Economic Development Corporation Xavier Arulraj said. Addressing mediapersons after inaugurating the disbursement of post-matric scholarship under the Prime Minister’s 15-Point Programme here recently, Rev. Arulraj said that only post-matriculation scholarship was sanctioned so far under the scheme. From 2008-09, pre-matric pupils from backward communities would also be covered, for which the Centre had allotted Rs.7.7 crore to Tamil Nadu. This apart, Rs.7.8 crore has been sanctioned for the current academic year for post-matric scholarship and students pursuing higher educational courses. On the disbursement of the post-matric scholarship, he said the assistance, meant for 2007-08, was released only recently. In all, 261 students of 32 educational institutions in the district had been sanctioned the scholarship to the tune of Rs.8.64 lakh. Pudukottai fourthHe said that Kanyakumari district got the highest share of Rs.18 lakh, followed by Cuddalore (Rs.15 lakh), Tirunelveli (Rs.13 lakh) and Pudukottai (Rs.8.64 lakh). Kancheepuram, with just two students getting a total of Rs.7,750, accounted for the lowest achievement, he said.
