PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry police on Thursday decided to postpone indefinitely the implementation of the order making it compulsory for the two-wheeler riders to wear helmet. Superintendent of Police (Traffic) S.Kuppusamy told reporters that the decision had been taken as the Chief Minister had asked the Director-General of Police to postpone implementation of the order. Earlier, the police announced that the order would be implemented from July 1. Subsequently the deadline was extended till July 10 on the ground that the public faced difficulties in procuring helmets “within a short time.” Out of 3.75 two-wheelers in the Union Territory, 1.5 lakh were in the Puducherry town alone, he said, adding that only 25,000 riders had purchased helmets so far.
