Kin’s refusal to accept bodies after post-mortem fuels tension

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATTUR: Tension prevailed at the Government Hospital, Tirupattur, on Thursday as relatives of a woman, who committed suicide along with her son, refused to take the bodies after post-mortem.

Police said that Geeta had filed a dowry harassment complaint against her sister-in-law Maheswari (31), a widow. Following this, Maheswari and her second son, Amarnath (12) committed suicide on Wednesday night.

Police said that Geeta’s husband, Palani often picked a quarrel with her, demanding dowry. In an inebriated state, he had assaulted Geeta, who sustained injuries in the head and hip. After that, she filed a complaint at the Tirupattur All Woman Police Station that Palani (28) along with his father Thavamani (55), mother Amudha (46), sister Maheswari (31) were harassing her for dowry.

Based on the complaint Palani, Thavamani and Amudha were arrested two days ago.

After this, Maheswari hanged herself along with her second son. Police said that Maheswari in a suicide note held Geeta responsible for her death. On Thursday, the hospital authorities were ready to hand over the bodies. But relatives of Maheswari refused to accept them and protested at the Government Hospital campus for two hours. They alleged that on Geeta’s complaint, a case had been foisted on Maheswari and demanded the arrest of Geeta immediately. Natrampalli MLA N.K.R.Suriya Kumar held talks with the relatives. The protestors wanted Palani, Thavamani and Amudha to be released on conditional bail. However, a compromise was reached and Maheswari’s relatives took the bodies to Thaamuthampatti at Andivattam near Tirupattur for cremation.
