THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ramakrishnan Suryabhan Gavai was sworn in Governor at a function held at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday evening. High Court Chief Justice H.L. Dattu administered the oath of office to the new Governor, who succeeds R.L. Bhatia.

Balan; Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac; Law Minister M. Vijayakumar; Education Minister M.A. Baby; Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy; Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran; Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran; Fisheries Minister S. Sarma; Kerala Congress(M) leader K.M. Mani; Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala; MLAs; and senior bureaucrats were present on the occasion. GreetingsMr. Achuthanandan and his Cabinet colleagues greeted the Governor after the ceremony. A warm reception was accorded to Mr. Gavai and his wife Kamaltai R. Gavai who reached here in the afternoon. Guard of honourThe State police presented a guard of honour to Mr. Gavai. Mr. Achuthanandan, Mr. Radhakrishnan, Mr. Chandy, Mr. Balakrishnan, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, Mr. Vijayakumar, Mr. Divakaran, Mayor C. Jayan Babu and senior bureaucrats were present at the airport to receive the Governor. After inspecting the guard of honour, Mr. Gavai met Mr. Achuthanandan and other dignitaries who were present at the airport. Mr. Gavai who hails from Darapur village in Amaravati, is an eminent social activist and a writer who has several books to his credit. Mr. Gavai was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1964 to 1994. He was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998. Mr. Gavai was conferred the national integration awards for peace and harmony and is a recipient of the prestigious Kusta Mitra Award.
