Congress wants CBI inquiry into MLAs’ desertion

Special Correspondent

BJP has murdered democracy, says Kharge

M. Mallikarjun Kharge

Bangalore: The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President M. Mallikarjun Kharge, along with a delegation of senior party leaders, told Governor Rameshwar Thakur that the Bharatiya Janata Party “had murdered democracy by inducing Congress MLAs to resign for money and ministership” and had violated the X schedule of the Constitution.

Speaking to presspersons after meeting the Governor, Mr. Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Veeranna Mathikatti said that they had urged the Governor to recommend an inquiry into what they termed “unlawful and immoral defections”.

He urged Mr. Thakur to invoke the provisions of Article 356 of the Constitution and dismiss the B.S. Yeddyurappa Government for the breakdown of the constitutional process.

Mr. Kharge said that crores of rupees had changed hands in the whole episode, which was an offence under the law and it should be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The undemocratic and unethical approach of Mr. Yeddyurappa and his Cabinet colleagues should be prevented at all cost, otherwise, it would be a mockery of democracy.

He said that “alluring MLAs to defect for posts and money was nothing but an open business deal, where loyalty was for sale and an insult to the mandate given by the voters. It is a shame that even the senior BJP leaders in New Delhi were party to such a heinous act”.

Mr. Kharge said that the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs had been complaining before their resignations that they had huge liabilities, and the BJP had assured them of nurturing their constituencies. .
