Rajasthan seeks ban on cotton export

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Rajasthan has called upon the Centre to impose a complete ban on export of cotton to save the cooperative and private sector yarn mills in the country. It says the export of cotton is depriving the weavers of their livelihood and affecting the textile industry. State Cooperative Minister Nathu Singh Gujjar, in a letter addressed to Union Textile Minister Shankarsinh Waghela, said the cotton prices were consistently rising as a result of unchecked exports and the mills were facing an acute shortage of cotton.

Mr. Gujjar pointed out that 87 of the 164 yarn mills in the cooperative sector in the country had closed down, while a large number of mills in the private sector were on the verge of closure.

The Minister said the ban on export should extend to the next season of cotton production beginning in September.
