Tuticorin: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a demonstration in front of Telegraph Office situated along Tuticorin-Kollam State Highway here on Thursday. They urged the government to take steps to restart vaccine production from the three historic public sector vaccine-manufacturing enterprises- 103-year-old Central Research Institute, Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh); a century old Pasteur Institute of India, Coonoor; B.C.G. Vaccine Laboratory, Guindy, at the earliest. The production from these units were recently suspended by the Drug Controller General of India for reasons of non-compliance with good manufacturing practice norms under the Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1945. K. Kanagaraj, District Secretary, CPI (M), said that the government should have held themselves responsible for non-compliance of norms as all the three units fell under public sector. In this scenario, steps should have been taken to correct the anomalies with the help of articulated policies instead of suspending the production from these institutes. K. S. Arujunan, Town Secretary of CPI (M) and T. Kumaravel, District Secretary of CITU spoke.
