This Day That Age
The Indian film – Do Ankhen Barah Haath – was awarded the prize of the International Catholic Film Bureau at the West Berlin International Film Festival on July 8. The film is directed by V. Shantaram, and the Bureau said in its judgment of the film that it was “a film whose profound and poetic symbolism” transcends all differences of culture and shows the redemption of the most rigid of men through complete charity, self-sacrifice and trust in God. The Indian film also received a silver bear for “an especially valuable achievement in depicting a significant social problem with poetic feeling. The film not only has great charm. It is also honest in treating the experiment of prison reform in accordance with the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.” The British war film “Ice Cold in Alex” won the International Film Journalists’ Association prize in Berlin for the way it handled “a deeply human theme.” The Golden Bear award for the best film shown went to Sweden’s “Smultronstaellet” (At the End of the Day). The Film Journalists’ Association also made a special mention of Ghana’s film “Jaguar” for its artistic qualities.
