Samajwadi support

By withdrawing support to the UPA government, the Left parties have proved that coalitions among parties of different ideologies harm good governance.

With the support of a regional party such as the SP, known for its links with big business, the UPA government will find it difficult to govern.

K.R. Viswanathan Pillai,

The Congress has done itself immense harm by accepting the SP’s offer of support. It is unfortunate for the country as a whole that it should be governed by such ideology-less government.

It is well known that in these days of coalition politics, political ideology and values have become subservient to political opportunism. It is, therefore, natural for the UPA, especially the Congress, to seek the support of any party for the survival of its government. It is also evident that the parties extending support will have their selfish demands. The more important question is: if the Manmohan Singh government wins the trust vote, which is likely as many MPs may not like to lose their position and privileges for the next nine months, will it tackle the major issues without damaging the overall interest of the country?

K.K. Cherian,

There is nothing wrong in the SP and other parties supporting the UPA government as there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics. A pre-poll arrangement among the Congress, the SP and other supporting parties would be beneficial to them.

D.B.N. Murthy,

No party in the UPA, except new entrant SP, has openly expressed its views on the nuclear deal. If the deal is in the interest of the nation, all the UPA constituents should come out in its support.

J. Fredrick Sarguru Doss,
