Centre for Educational Research to be started

TIRUCHI: Madurai Kamaraj University will start a Centre for Educational Research on July 15, utilising a one-time grant of Rs.1 crore sanctioned by the State government.

The Centre would assist in evolving policies on education, promote research and development in educational programmes, take up special initiative for women’s education, empowerment of rural masses through education and bridge urban-rural divide in educational standards, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University R. Karpaga Kumaravel said here on Thursday.

Addressing mediapersons on the sidelines of inaugural of two-day UGC-sponsored seminar on ‘Religions and humanism’ organised by the Department of Philosophy of National College here, he said that the State Government had released the grant two years ago for establishing the Centre. The university had contributed a matching grant of Rs.1 crore.

Prof. Karpaga Kumaravel said that a governing body, headed by the Vice-Chancellor and comprising members including the State Project Director of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan; the Director of School Education; the Director of Directorate of Teacher Education Research and Training (DTERT), has been constituted for the centre.

The Chairman, National Council for Teacher Education, New Delhi, Mohammad Akthar Siddiqui, will inaugurate the Centre, during the 106th birth anniversary celebrations of the late Chief Minister K.Kamaraj.

Earlier, inaugurating the seminar, Prof. Karpaga Kumaravel underlined the need for motivating youths to understand the basic tenets of all religions for achieving peace and harmony.

The Director of Centre of Distance Education, Bharathidasan University, N. Baskaran; the Principal of National College K. Anbarasu; the Organising secretary of the seminar, S. Gunasekaran were among those who spoke.
