UNWANTED BUNDLE OF JOY: Abandoned child that was found at K.C. General Hospital in Bangalore on Thursday. Bangalore: A two-day old girl baby was found abandoned in the women’s toilet block of K.C. General Hospital’s outpatient section Thursday afternoon. Hospital authorities, who said the baby was not delivered at the hospital, suspect that some outsider would have left the baby there. The baby will be in the custody of the hospital till Friday morning. Doctors at K.C. General Hospital performed a few tests, including the Coombs’ test to look for antibodies that act against the red blood cells of the abandoned baby. “This will help us tally the baby’s blood group with the mother’s if someone comes forward to claim it. The baby is hale and hearty,” Hospital Medical Superintendent M. Vishwa Aradhya told The Hindu on Thursday. He said the housekeeping staff noticed something moving on a plastic bag in the toilet block bathroom while cleaning it in the afternoon. On closer look, it was a baby bundled. “They immediately informed us and we found that a clip was attached to the baby’s umbilical cord. This indicates that the baby was not born in our hospital as we do not put any clip. We directly thread the cord and cut it,” he said. The Medical Superintendent said the baby could have been born anywhere — either in any of the hospitals run by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) or “at home because only trained midwives clip the umbilical cord.” He said some 15 women had delivered at the hospital since Wednesday and none of the babies were missing. “We have informed the police. They visited the hospital and asked us to keep the baby with us till Friday after which they will arrange for the upkeep of the baby,” Dr. Aradhya said.
