THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A garbage processing plant will be set up in 4.15 acres of land at Elavanikara in Neyattinkara municipality, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. In a written reply to a question in the Assembly on Thursday, the Minister said steps had been taken to acquire land in Elavanikara ward in Perumbazhanthoor village for setting up the plant. Steps for assigning value for the land and feasibility have commenced. Mr. Mohammed Kutty, in a written reply to another question by Varkala Kahar and George Mercier, said the City Corporation had decided to set up another garbage plant in the city having a capacity of five tonnes with financial assistance of the Union government. The plant, included in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Mission, will use the latest technology developed by the National Institute for Inter-disciplinary Science and Technology. The Minister said the amount of garbage being transported to Vilappilsala plant would come down once the new plant was set up. This will also increase the efficiency of the existing plant. The Poabson-run garbage plant at Vilappilsala was taken over by the City Corporation on March 27 this year. The government handed over Rs.7.07 crore fixed for the plant, he added. The Corporation has entrusted the work for streamlining the operations of the garbage plant at Vilappilsala to the Centre for Environmental and Development, an accredited agency. Permit cancelledThe City Corporation has cancelled the permit of an apartment complex, which was built flouting norms by Heera Constructions at Kowdiar junction, the Minister said in reply to another question. The Corporation has not issued door numbers to the flats. Further action in this regard can be taken only after the High Court disposes of the case in this regard. Revised master planThe government has approved the revised master/development plans of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur and Kozhikode cities and revised zoning regulations of the structure plan of Kochi, the Minister said. Steps have been taken to make changes in the master/development plans of other cities. Mr. Mohammed Kutty said the government had cancelled 151 orders that were issued from November 23, 2005 onwards granting concessions in zoning regulations.
