Plan to conserve Valiyathura pier

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is planning to conserve the more -than-a-century-old pier at Valiyathura here as a heritage structure, Minister in charge of Ports M. Vijayakumar told the Assembly on Thursday. Replying to a submission from V. Surendran Pillai, he said the pier had sustained some damage in the high wave action that occurred along the coast at Valiyathura on July 1. It had seen no harbour activity for more than 40 years. The facilities such a structure could offer were not suitable for modern shipping purposes. This pier was now being used mainly by fishermen to launch their catamarans into the sea during the monsoon season.

Referring to Mr. Pillai’s observation that it had tourism potential, Mr. Vijayakumar said the Ports Department and the Tourism Department would examine the prospects.
