Staff Reporter

Project to be implemented over a period of three years

It will reduce the time taken for fault location and restoration

Project expected to boost revenue realisation

Bangalore: Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has taken up a project to automate the distribution network for monitoring, control and operation of the 11 kV network in Bangalore by providing suitable control and communication equipment.

The project, titled Distribution Automation System, which is the first of its kind in the country, is estimated to cost around Rs. 563 crore.

According to a press release here on Thursday, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation is extending financial assistance of Rs. 417 crore for the project.

The implementation of the project will enhance the reliability and quality of power supply in the city. The revenue realisation will improve because of the reduction in break down time and quick restoration achieved through distribution automation.

Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa on Thursday attended a meeting with the project consultants along with K. Jairaj, principal secretary, Energy Department, and Chairman of ESCOMs; Gangaram Baderiya, Managing Director, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd., and Tushar Giri Nath, Managing Director, BESCOM. The project will be implemented from 2008-09 to 2011-12. The reliability of power supply at the 11 kV feeder level in the city is 99 per cent.

The reliability in terms of actual interruption per consumer is 86.22 hours a year, which is more when compared with Tokyo, New York, and Paris, where the interruption is in the range of a few minutes.

The high interruption level was because the distribution system in the city was operated manually, the release added.
