State seeks more power

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Karnataka is facing a 700 MW power shortage on account of the weak south-west monsoon and depletion of water in its hydel reservoirs.

To tackle the crisis, the State has decided to take various steps, including cloud seeding and purchasing more power from the Central grid and private power generators. Rainfall has been deficient in 124 out of the 175 taluks of the State.

The State Cabinet, which met on Thursday, decided to ask the Union Government to double its allocation from the southern power grid from the present 15 per cent share.

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala have been allocated 30 per cent of power from the southern grid. Karnataka has no power station run by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting.

The State has been drawing 796 MW from the Central grid daily, while the other southern States draw 1400 MW. “The Centre is giving ‘step-motherly treatment’ to the State,” she alleged.
