Supply to Chennai from Mid-August Chances of water loss reduced HYDERABAD: Water will be released from Telugu Ganga project in Andhra Pradesh to Chennai city from mid-August. The exact date of releasing water will be finalised after joint meeting of officials from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to be held soon. Pending finalisation of the dates, the government here on Thursday decided to open the head-sluices of the Telugu Ganga canal at the Kandaleru project in Nellore district on July 14 to supply water to Tirupati on a priority. A cross-bund will be laid across the Telugu Ganga canal at its 90th kilometre mark to create sufficient depth in the canal to facilitate drawal of water by pumpsets. It will then flow by gravity to Kailasgiri reservoir that will supplement drinking water supply in Tirupati. Sources in Irrigation Department said the storage in Kandaleru stood at 38 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft), the same as last year, against its full capacity of 68 tmcft. This quantity was sufficient to ensure supply to Chennai without much difficulty. An additional 36 tmcft was available in Somasila project, if necessary, to supplement Kandaleru. At present, 5 tmcft of water is available in Poondi reservoir, the drinking water source of Chennai and, therefore, releases could be deferred by a few days. Chances of water loss in the Telugu Ganga canal due to leakages and seepage have reduced as its entire 151 km length has been lined now.
