Ponmudy gives away bank passbooks to farmers’ groups

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudy issued bank passbooks to 250 farmers’ groups at an official function held at Ginjee near here on Wednesday.

The Minister said it was proposed to constitute 10,000 farmers’ joint responsible groups all over the State. Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi would formally inaugurate the scheme at Vellore on August 1.

Each group would comprise 10 members and they would be encouraged to adopt modern farming techniques to increase crop yield. The Minister noted that with a view to bail out the farmers who incurred losses owing to recurring floods, the Chief Minister had waived farm loans to the tune of Rs.7,000 crore.

However, to sustain agricultural growth the Chief Minister had also announced disbursement of fresh loans.

The new scheme would enable the farmers to access bank loans.
