Southern Railway wins women’s title

VICTORIOUS: The Sothern Railways women’s team which won the Chennai District ’A’ Division volleyball league.

Chennai: Southern Railway annexed the SRM Trophy in the senior division volleyball championship for women beating GKM Volleyball Club at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Thursday. Railway won 25-19, 25-8.

While retaining the title, Southern Railway showed how experience could be combined with team-work and individual skills. While Betsy, who played at the centre was the cynosure, there was some breath-taking defence work by the libero, Teena Joseph. Anumol was another who contributed her mite in the success.

The early trends clearly favoured GKM, which held a fairly substantial lead of 11-7 in the first set. But Railway levelled at 17-all and sailed comfortably to win the set at 25-19.

Some nice placements by Ramya, captain of GKM, notwithstanding, the Railway’s dominance in the second set was clear.

The winner secured a cash award of Rs. 10,000, while the runner-up got Rs. 5,000. Mr. A. Subramanian, AGDP (EOW), and Dr. Sethuraman, Registrar, SRM University, gave away the prizes, in the presence of Mr. Walter Dawaram, President, Tamil Nadu Athletics Association.

The results: Men: Armed Police bt SDAT 25-15, 25-14; Armed Police bt TNEB 25-23, 25-23, 26-24; IOB bt Southern Railway 25-23, 25-18, 25-16; Satyabama bt BSNL 25-15, 25-22, 15-25, 25-14.
